Could Little Ol’ Me Possibly Learn to Live Like Julia?

Could Little Ol’ Me Possibly Learn to Live Like Julia?

If you've read more than a few of my posts you know that I have lots of 'things' - things that irk me, things that make me cringe, things that I love, things that I cannot live without. Some of those things are substantial, essential tasks and duties.  Some of those things are pretty much inconsequential and arbitrary and are only problems IN MY MIND BECAUSE I LET THEM BECOME SUCH. Scary, isn't it, just how much anxiety our minds can create over such unimportant nonsense?  Of course, we only think it's nonsense AFTER we've dealt with it and jumped...Read More
Pizza Night at the Farm

Pizza Night at the Farm

Sunday is often "Pizza Night" at our house, usually because we are out and about doing chores and such and the last thing I want to think about after a busy week with 2 farmers markets in a row (Friday in Goshen, Saturday in Ringwood) is planning a big meal. So, I don't. This Sunday, however, we did not get take-out from our favorite place (Village Pizza, Goshen.... Sal is the sweetest man and loves our swiss chard!).  Fletch and I delivered some produce to Adams Fairacre Farms in Newburgh and we kinda shopped around.  I saw some pizza dough...Read More
If mares eat oats, and does eat oats….

If mares eat oats, and does eat oats….

...why is this one eating my kid's shoelace? I mentioned in my last post that we visited the babies (they literally cry like babies) at Edgwick Farm in Cornwall, NY.  I had a blast, Thomas was standoffish and quiet.  He claimed later that he didn't like all the poop in the yard.  He's not so far off, at 8, from his early years in diapers, so I don't get it, but perhaps he just had an off day.  We all have 'em. But how can you when you're getting to cuddle with THESE?!?!?!?!  I think I counted 9 doelings climbing...Read More
My November… plus Cookies, Revisited

My November… plus Cookies, Revisited

"Mom, did we have power on  Halloween?" "No." "Did we have power the day before Halloween?" "No." "When did the power go out?" "October 29th." "And what's today?" "November 5th" "Well that's just ridiculous..." **Note: Power went out 10/29 when 2 trees came down and took out a ton of lines.  Thanks to Frankie for spearheading the tree removal process!  Power was finally restored on 11/6. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Up here in Orange County, we've pretty much recovered and Hurricane...Read More
Lemon Ricotta Bars (with Goat’s Milk Ricotta)

Lemon Ricotta Bars (with Goat’s Milk Ricotta)

Holy cow. We started markets this week.  It was hot.  REALLY hot. I drank a lot of water, lemonade.  and iced coffee and saw a ridiculous number of smiling faces - all of them thrilled that we are back and selling lots of fabulous local produce.  Many sincere thanks to those who remembered and mentioned the hardships we endured last summer with the massive, devastating floods.  It was nice to hear the praise and admiration, not that it was expected or even deserved.  We did what we had to do and we got through it.   Anyone faced with similar...Read More

Ladies, This One’s for You….

Have you scheduled your annual mammogram yet? Well get on that!  There's no time like the present.... You don't want to waste a gorgeous day off in the spring or summer do ya?  Do.  It.  Today. Around the farm, this winter in particular, there's not much going on. This is when we take care of things that we've had to put off because of that darned growing season.  So I've been seeing doctors, dentists, optometrists, and hair colorists (shhh.... don't tell).  I've been cleaning and purging and sorting and organizing .  I've been choosing paint colors, patching nail holes and moving furniture.  I'm...Read More

‘Royal’ly Cool Ideas for Cookie Decorating (Part 2)

So you made all your cookies and you got all your pastry bags full of various colors of royal icing, right?  I know, I know... You've been waiting patiently for me to tell you HOW to decorate the cookies.  WHY?  How could you resist?  If you have never, ever decorated a cookie before, I urge you to just dive in and get piping (that's what you call it when you squeeze the frosting out of a pastry bag).  You'll get the hang of it, I promise.  And I bet you'll find that you get more creative, faster, and more confident...Read More

‘Royal’ly Cool Ideas for Cookie Decorating (Part 1)

Yes.  I think that's funny.  I'm lame like that. I was doing some Christmas shopping at Michael's craft store the other day and couldn't resist the adorable assortment of cookie cutters.   WHAT?  Michael's has great percent-off coupons!  I NEVER make rolled cookies and I NEVER have the time to decorate rolled cookies without a small child at my side.  This week, I had the time.  And obviously I now had the cutters.  I know, you're shocked.  My resistance is really low at Michael's, Target, and Bed, Bath and Beyond. It was cookie week on the Martha Stewart Show, and in...Read More

When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Lemon Curd!

[caption id="attachment_1664" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Like a burst of sunshine!"][/caption] Top 5 Reasons to NOT COOK: 5) the chef is under the weather (repeatedly) 4) the chef's kid is sick and requires constant attention (also repeatedly) 3) the chef's cat is injured and requires care, including oral antibiotics - which we all KNOW is a near-impossible task 2) doctor and/or veterinary appointments take up much of the day And the Number One reason? 1) extended winter turns simple daily chores  into drudgery I can't be the only one who had the March from hell, right?   One crappy thing after another made me wish I could go...Read More

The Freezer Wasteland

[caption id="attachment_1327" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption=""You're no match for me! Your icy length taunting me from afar. I'll get you... and if I don't, my ally the Sun surely will." "][/caption] You have one too, right?  The freezer, be it upright, chest or attached to your beloved fridge, tends to be forgotten territory - especially the back or bottom.  We all know the ice cream sits front and center - no need to reach or look any further!  [caption id="attachment_1325" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Maybe we need snow tires on the wheelbarrow?"][/caption] I'm mid-way through my New Year Clean and Purge event.  Each room,...Read More
