Pizza Night at the Farm

Pizza Night at the Farm

Sunday is often "Pizza Night" at our house, usually because we are out and about doing chores and such and the last thing I want to think about after a busy week with 2 farmers markets in a row (Friday in Goshen, Saturday in Ringwood) is planning a big meal. So, I don't. This Sunday, however, we did not get take-out from our favorite place (Village Pizza, Goshen.... Sal is the sweetest man and loves our swiss chard!).  Fletch and I delivered some produce to Adams Fairacre Farms in Newburgh and we kinda shopped around.  I saw some pizza dough...Read More
There’s No Place Like Home

There’s No Place Like Home

Out here in the Black Dirt area of Orange County, NY, we have to deal with very unique circumstances and events, and after 40<cough, cough> years of living here, I'm kinda used to those things.  My father, after 70 years on Celery Avenue, probably knows the place better than anyone else, except maybe his big sister Beverly.  Hell, my kid has seen 3 devastating floods in his short lifetime, each one worse than the last, and he thinks it's just the way things are here in the farmland. Twisters, or dust devils, are a regular occurrence around here and while...Read More
I’m Ba-ack!

I’m Ba-ack!

It seems like I fell off the face of the earth, right? Not exactly.... but it feels like I spent the last week roaming the surface of the sun. Thomas: That's impossible, Mommy.  The sun doesn't even HAVE a surface because it's made up of gases.  EVERYBODY knows that. <insert pre-pubescent eye roll> Thus was my vacation in hot and sunny southern Florida.  The Boy will turn nine next weekend.  Judging by his behavior of late, he may not make it to ten. All things considered, and by all things I mean airport security (way to go, Kash, heading home...Read More

Sorry, Charlie

Sometimes tuna just doesn't cut it.  I mean, sure... it was great when your mom made you a tuna salad sandwich on white toast when you were home {faking being} sick and were cuddled up on the couch drinking tea and watching Phil Donohue. What?  You didn't fake being sick?  I had a cot with my name on it in the nurse's office at school.  Gym class was to be avoided at all costs. That one episode of Little House on the Prairie when Walnut Grove had an outbreak of typhoid?  I started checking my temperature hourly.   And when...Read More
If mares eat oats, and does eat oats….

If mares eat oats, and does eat oats….

...why is this one eating my kid's shoelace? I mentioned in my last post that we visited the babies (they literally cry like babies) at Edgwick Farm in Cornwall, NY.  I had a blast, Thomas was standoffish and quiet.  He claimed later that he didn't like all the poop in the yard.  He's not so far off, at 8, from his early years in diapers, so I don't get it, but perhaps he just had an off day.  We all have 'em. But how can you when you're getting to cuddle with THESE?!?!?!?!  I think I counted 9 doelings climbing...Read More

Missing… but still in action.

Get a load of this... Yes, that's a frog. It's a frog in a pint-sized deli container. It's a frog that I found hiding behind the window fan in my son's room Friday night. I went to close the window because the forecast was for rain the next day when I was at market.  Bleary eyed and ready for sleep, I go in and remove the fan from the window, only to find this THING attached to the screen on the INSIDE! I screamed, but just a little.  Once I caught my breath, I raced around trying to find SOMETHING...Read More
I see no point in reinventing the wheel

I see no point in reinventing the wheel

I'm too busy for that. The last two weeks of second grade are a blur. We had third grade orientation, Moving Up Day (The Boy will be going to a new school for grade 3), Spring Concert (he had a solo with his friend who happens to be a girl but is ABSOLUTELY NOT his girlfriend), and Field Day.  Then we had his class play (The Foolish Little Hare) complete with classroom 'reception' following performance.  I made Whoopie Pies.  They were incredible. I said something to Mom the other day and she replied, "You'd rather be too busy than bored......Read More

Ooops!

Did you get an unfinished post in your inbox? My apologies! I was writing and drinking coffee and watching It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (original version TYVM) and I guess my itchy pinky hit PUBLISH by accident! As soon as I recover from my embarrassment at this faux pas (and the movie's over) I'll finish the post and get it right out to ya.... Thanks for your understanding, and I'm so sorry! But at least you can see my creative work in progress, right? LOL

You Won’t Believe This….

Or maybe you will.  If you're in the northeast, you probably got hit hard by Snowtober, that glorious nor'easter that snuck up on us and left so many of us in the cold.  Who the hell thinks up these hokey names, anyway?  And why am I using this one?  Sheesh.... So we're literally stuck on the farm with no power, no heat and no water (going on 3 full days, and authorities say service won't be restored for at least another 3 days).  I'm so thankful to Irene and Lee for the training we received during the floods.  If not...Read More
