All I Wanted for My Birthday was Virus Protection

All I Wanted for My Birthday was Virus Protection

Happy 2012 everyone! I'm sorry I've been out of commission lately.  It appears as though some little cyberbeast decided to take up residence in my computer and now that it's fixed, I can get back to business.  Luckily, I only have to trade foodstuffs for top-notch tech work and with lots of time on my hands right now, I can cook up a storm (thank you Fletch)! Oh yeah, and I also celebrated my 29th birthday! Yes, again.  Shut up.  We had a wonderful night and Thomas got to experience 'hibachi' for the first time.   If you could have seen his eyes...Read More
Heaven in a Springform Pan: Pumpkin-Mascarpone Cheesecake

Heaven in a Springform Pan: Pumpkin-Mascarpone Cheesecake

What a busy weekend! And the holidays aren't even really upon us yet.  Heck, I haven't even vacuumed up one single pine needle.  *sigh*  It's gonna be a lonnnnggg and crazy December. [caption id="attachment_2536" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Thomas had to journal about his weekend with JoJo the Dinosaur. I doubt any other kid in class has a pic like THIS![/caption] This past weekend The FarmGirl took the party on the road.  I gave my very first Mobile Cooking Lesson!   I took my kid and some equipment and lots of homegrown veggies and journeyed to a friend's house to teach her and her...Read More
Gobble, Gobble…. Thanksgiving Prep

Gobble, Gobble…. Thanksgiving Prep

I'm not the only one who goes food-crazy on Thanksgiving.  I KNOW I'm not.  I've seen my share of folks pushing their chairs away from holiday tables and gently rubbing their tummies as they mosey to the living room to wait for dessert. (???) I always have such good intentions and grand plans to put an elaborate spread on our Thanksgiving table, but I've learned that it's just more leftovers that my fridge cannot handle.  We were only 5 people this year for Turkey Day, and do we REALLY NEED 5 side dishes in addition to standard mashed taters 'n'...Read More

Butternut Squash Risotto in a Hurry

This was my snack the other day.   These lovely sungold cherry tomatoes were like a burst of sweet sunshine and eating them almost made me forget just what a freakin' mess it is out in the fields. We have three greenhouses of different sizes.  They've been named Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear.  Baby Bear currently houses an assortment of 'leftovers' since it's the only greenhouse that wasn't flooded. These cherry tomatoes came from one of those leftovers.  There's also a selection of hotter-than-hot chile peppers, a flat of rosemary, several assorted variety tomato and pepper plants all in...Read More

Oh No, Say it Ain’t So… A Vegan is Coming to Dinner!

WHY are people afraid of different? The 'V-word' strikes fear in the hearts of many when faced with the prospect of cooking for a dinner guest who eats no animal products whatsoever, especially at holiday time.  What the heck do you feed a vegan or vegetarian  for Thanksgiving? Well, first off, do NOT go out and buy a Tofurkey unless it's requested.  Sure, some people NEED to have something to carve at their Holiday Table, but let's face facts.  It's still a processed food product that will TASTE LIKE it came out of a box. It May LOOK Like Spaghetti…..

It May LOOK Like Spaghetti…..

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="225"] A lovely autumn day on Celery Ave[/caption] Yeah... Spaghetti squash wasn't a hit with The Boy.  At least he tried it, though, which is an improvement over the last 2 years or so. He even tried Brussels sprouts this week.  Well, not exactly the sprouts.  You see, Brussels sprouts grow on a tall stalk with leaves coming out in a circular fashion, and the sprouts grow right above the stem of the leaf.  As Dad (Farmer Sonny) puts it, a little cabbage grows out of each crotch.  Not so appetizing when you put it THAT way, right?  Anyway,...Read More

Subliminal Messaging in Blogs

.... works to MY advantage!  I feel such a surge of power right now. Guess who came home yesterday to a phone message saying, "It's Halloween, so the westerns are being made right  now and will be keeping warm in the oven whenever you're ready to eat"?  Heh heh heh.  Thanks, Mom! They were delicious.  *sigh*  I eat them open-faced, usually, as I'd much prefer to stuff myself full of greasy, eggy goodness than soft bread.  I had 2 sandwiches with 3-4 westerns on each, the last sandwich consumed while I took Thomas to get a warmer jacket because it was...Read More

The Farm Through Someone Else’s Rose-Colored Glasses

Those are some NICE TOMATOES! Zsa Zsa (Jenny) was on the farm a few weeks ago and we had quite a memorable visit.  She toured the farm, worked with us in the barn and at two markets, cooked and ate up a storm, and took a bunch of photos.  I talked about it in my post a few weeks back,  but Jenny wrote all about it and posted to her blog the other day.   Please check it out and get a non-farmgirl's perspective on her experiences in the Black Dirt.  This Boston babe rocked Orange County liked nobody's business! The FarmGirl Cooks… and So Does Her Dad!

[caption id="attachment_620" align="alignright" width="223" caption="Sonny preps corn to blanch and freeze for winter."][/caption] Don't get me wrong... Mom does too - just not as much as (or with the enjoyment of) Dad. And most of his creations start the same way:  "Cut up some bacon and put it in a pan, then put in the ________". Do you remember the cilantro-chile sauce I made a few weeks ago?  I shared some with Dad (because SURPRISE!  he popped in when I was making it), and then gave him a bit to take home.  A few hours later, I get a call.  "I took...Read More
“I love you more than Daddy…. but not more than Santa.”

“I love you more than Daddy…. but not more than Santa.”

[caption id="attachment_499" align="alignleft" width="300"] The Mutual Admiration Society[/caption] Yeah... this is gonna be a sappy one. Since school started (which, let's be honest, NONE of us could wait for), I've been missing my little sidekick. Kinda. I mean, having him with me (and trying to entertain and keep safe a 6-year-old with equally active mind and body) while I worked was a bit frustrating at times because even a big boy needs cuddle time and sometimes that really interferes with getting my work done. [caption id="attachment_500" align="alignright" width="135"] Boxing Zucchini with Grandma[/caption] Since day camp ended a month ago, Thomas...Read More
